Muscle Energy

This form of therapy uses the muscle’s energy on itself, through a series of gentle contractions that relax and lengthen the muscle. Unlike typical stretching exercises where the patient is passive, and the therapist does most of the work, here the patient is an active participant.

Muscle Energy Overview

We base this treatment technique on the principle of reciprocal inhibition, which is to the effect that muscles on one side of a joint will contract to accommodate a contraction on the other side if pressure is applied indirectly. Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is used in treating patients suffering from muscle spasms. By lengthening muscles that have been shortened, ligament and muscle are strengthened, thus improving the motion range.

A typical MET session involves the patient having to contract a muscle for an average of 5 seconds, while the therapist applies pressure on it. This process is repeated several times to stretch the muscle each successive time.

TYPES OF MET

There are different MET for various muscle groups and types of injuries, all of which our therapists at Worksafe & Wellness can provide. They are:
1. Crossed extensor reflex for treating muscular injuries
2. Joint mobilization using muscle force to restore range of motion in a joint
3. Oculocephalogyric reflex for treating cervical and truncal muscles
4. Postisometric relaxation
5. Reciprocal inhibition
6. Respiratory help for treating somatic dysfunction
